Exmoor
Picture taken from one of the roads that runs across the high ground of Exmoor, where there are sheep and Exmoor ponies and red Devon cattle roaming freely, and sometimes wandering along and across the road.

I was quite startled by Exmoor - by how high and how bleak the hills were. I suppose I was expecting something like the New Forest, or the Dorset heaths, with wide expanses of purple heather.

Having left the cafe at Greyfriars I decided to attempt another flan so consulted a randomised Oblique Strategy card for inspiration and received "Bridges -build -burn". There are plenty of bridges in Worcester, over roads, railway, canal, and rivers. I've crossed many of them. But there's one newly built bridge over the River Severn that I hadn't visited and it has a cafe besides. Will I make it? Will I accidentally burn it down? Will I die en route and my viking-themed burning boat burial pass underneath as it carries me to my final destination? Spoiler: not that last one. XD

Walking along roads familiar from previous flanage, I was surprised to find an alley I'd never noticed before. Obviously I turned along it, which was lucky because my diverted route brought me to a mural of a GIANT raccoon:

Season finale spoiler )

During the Christmas episode we saw the firm's acapella group, which might have just been an excuse to highlight one character's amazing singing voice. Anyway, they were singing White Winter Hymnal, and I'm going to just post two quick videos, the original version and a different acapella cover:

(Those lyrics can't be entirely right - surely the pack is swaddled in their coats, not swallowed?)

Anyway, you'll notice that in the first one they weirdly pronounce "the" with a "long e" (the vowel in pee) before the words "white snow". Does that strike anybody else as a weird place to do that?

Crossover time!

I was looking up fictional law firm names and you know how Angel has the evil law firm Wolfram and Hart? Apparently NCIS has Wolfram, Hart and Donowitz. No word on if they're evil. Are they evil?

I almost went for links only but I started reading today a revised edition (I think it's moving from self pubbed to traditional) of a novel called Pantomine by L.R. Lam and the main character is intersexed (and apparently the series had been popular)

This seemed like the best thing to end Pride month on. Lam goes on to talk about what the series meant to fans and why it was being revamped and rereleased and they mentioned something I've been talking a lot to [personal profile] evil_little_dog and [personal profile] sysann recently. I've mentioned it here before. There is no ONE right way to be something.

Lam put it as 'no group is a monolith' and my works won't be for everyone. I feel that was most likely added to the author's preface because of the hate you can get on social media (someone eld and I both followed on YT/FB committed suicide in part over the pressures and the hate directed their way last week). I wish fans could understand that. All too often you get people tearing down someone because the experience they read in the book was not their experience and therefore not valid.

It's hard. You know you can't please everyone. You don't want to accidentally hurt a group of people. On the other hand, people do need to realize that their way isn't the only way either. For example (which I used before) several years back pre-Covid my local writers group had four trans members. Not one of them had the same path or level of acceptance from friends and family so when I see someone screaming 'that's not how it is to be trans' I think of this. By this hard stance, you're saying only one of those four people are right.

And it's not limited to that of course. You pretty much name a group or career and someone will be there to screaming that's not how it's done. So how, as an author, can you minimize that?

Do your research. Provide sources in the author's notes if you can. Get sensitivity readers if you can (which isn't always easy or affordable especially if you're a self pubber). Know you can't please everyone. Do your best.

Sunset, Bewdley, 29th June 2025
149/365: Sunset towards the Wyre Forest
Click for a larger, sharper image

A very warm (27 °C) day today, but disappointingly cloudy, which made it feel very humid and uncomfortable. I had enough time for a pint of perry at lunchtime, which was nice -- Wetherspoons is doing a Craft Cider Festival, and perry qualifies as it's pear cider. Specifically, I drank Midnight Special from Mr Whitehead's, a Hampshire company. A new one on me: medium-sweet and easy drinking, and although you wouldn't call it especially complex it did slip down well on a very warm day in the beer garden. My photo from today is of sunset during a short walk I was taking on the western fringes of Bewdley. This photo was taken at 9:56 pm, and I'm looking towards the Wyre Forest on the horizon.

But throughout Jensen's career there has been a theme...

That man knows how to shower!

- Pride: I have GAY Marmite! In the UK, branded goods claiming a tiny percentage of their profits go to charity fundraising aren't uncommon, and Christmas / Easter branded items happen but I don't generally see event themed goods in High Street shops. However, my supermarket delivery this week included rainbow, Elton John, anti-AIDS, rebranded Marmite! Need to know: the Elton John AIDS Foundation is banned in Russia, and the EJAF knows where Lesotho is. It takes me ages to eat my way through a whole jar so I'll have cheering GAY Marmite to increase my happiness every time I open my eye-level kitchen cupboard for a long time. :-)

- Habitat: I sorted out and re-dyed everything old that could be renewed. I love the moment when all my favourites look at their best again.

- Pop: f'Keith Starmer and Lisa Nandy's attempts at government censorship of pop music are going about as well as British government censorship of popular media usually does (see also Lady Chatterley's Lover, Spycatcher, &c). "It’s upsetting that the way this country is going keeps our music relevant!"

- Birb log: 15 June, Jackdaws still flying off with beaks full of food.
16 June, juvenile ? Song Thrush in front garden (these are ringed locally and I hear them sing occasionally but I rarely see them).
25 June, Jackdaws in semi-juvenile plumage and with behaviours such as frequent vocalising and begging for food (including begging each other, lol, which helps establish the wider flock's pecking order). Most of the parents are very unimpressed with being harassed for food at this stage, although they do still voluntarily feed the kids, and adults will cheerfully put the youngsters in their place if the kids are failing to copy adult foraging behaviour or are trying to steal food the adults have found. This morning's flock was about a dozen individuals.

Usually [personal profile] zwei_hexen does this around half way through and I meant to but this month has been on fire. So why not at the end(ish) Let's see what you've been working on all month if you want to share. The rules of the game are lifted directly from [personal profile] zwei_hexen's usual post.

Do you have a passion project, not-so-guilty pleasure, hot obsession, or slow-burn romance with a fandom? Newest fics you posted? Chapter updates? If so, would you share it with us? Whether it's a 300K WiP or a double drabble, please feel free to leave us a link to it in the comments.

A few simple considerations:

Age restrictions and content warnings: Please keep in mind this journal is public and has no content warning. For your convenience, we've put in an age restriction to this post only, so you can also post headers and summaries to more mature-rated stories. However, please put in warnings if what you share might contain possible triggers and put any mature and/or NSFW content (images, text examples, etc.) behind a text link only, to keep this journal a safe place to visit for everybody.

Comment size, images and headers: As cuts don't work on comments, please crop/downsize images to 600 pix max for the longest side and limit text samples to about 20 lines. If you post an AO3 header with a wall of tags, please limit them to about 4 lines here and indicate that there are more.

For ease of browsing, please name your fandom in the subject line of your comment and consider making different comments for each fandom you’re sharing, if you’d like.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them here or to drop a note to [personal profile] cornerofmadness

We’re looking forward to seeing what you’ve been working on! Also, please check out the older rec-your-work posts you can find under the link on the top right of the journal; we try to keep the fandom tags updated on these entries for your convenience.

Happy Pride.....

Malmsmead is tiny. An arched stone bridge with a ford beside it. A National Trust tea room. A gallery. But it's the starting point for a walk along the remote valley of Badgworthy Water, setting of the 19th century romance, Lorna Doone.

I have regrets

Jun. 28th, 2025 10:55 pm
cornerofmadness: (Default)
[personal profile] cornerofmadness
So yesterday I cut out the saplings (elm and ash) from my garden. I've been fighting the for years. I didn't get a chance before I left and with all that rain, they are more than sixty percent of the garden and the poison ivy from across the way is now everywhere too. Two years ago one of my two roses was half dead and then all dead last year. this year my remaining rose is nearly dead. It'll be gone by next year.

So I came to the sad conclusion I have to strip the garden down to bare earth. I can't win this fight. My disability makes gardening hard enough. Removing a shit tons of stumps and poison ivy is a bit beyond me. I'm waiting for the fall because I CAN save the lilies and I do have a lot of them.

I've been having my exhaustion episodes. Today was so bad I woke up, tried to read, fell back to sleep. Could hardly stand until 1 in the afternoon. I did what I wanted to do, dug into my bedroom closet and I learned nothing from doing the same in the coat closet. At least this didn't take 4 days to undo the mess but the living room is barely passable and my bedroom is barely usable but I put four garbage bags of shoes/purses/belts/clothes in the car for donation. 1 garbage bag of unsalvable garbage removed. two more piles of t-shirts sorted (one I can wear as work shirts the other are ones I want to use to do quilts)

Why did I still have 6 pairs of high heels in there? (argued with my boomer father over them because he's sure a) I'm too old and fat to be attractive b) women wear them for men only and still wear them in spite of me telling him I spend all my days with young women and for the most part they do NOT wear them any more and there aren't that many for sale in stores these days)

Why do I have a sweatshirt from 1987?

Why do I keep so much junk?

Why does cleaning make me so ill. I DID wear my damn mask. My chest is tickling. I'm coughing. My throat is sore.

I also have three giant bags of manga in there for donation. I managed to get most of it back in the closet. You can't tell i took out 5 literal bags of shit. I'm ridiculous.

And I'm not going to clean all the things I wanted to between selecting that closet AND finally opening the utensil drawers to find out the mouse shit in them. Well fuck. Now I have to go get my gloves, bleach, a better mask, new drawer inserts, fire.... I could cry

One of the artists I like for Hazbin's computer died and they were doing a live VA thing with the people they do that with so I chipped in a few bucks. At least there is something I don't regret about today.

I even regret not holding Rocket who was so desperate to sit on me at the computer he managed to tear bloody ruts in my leg trying to get up on my lap.

Day14_Its_All_In_Your_Head

Perhaps it was the bag of cherries on the counter, perhaps the cherry ice cream in the freezer, but I came to realize that what we were asked to draw, the impossible 'living of the best life' or a sterile cityscape coated in scarlet paint, that the answer is "that it's all in your head". Or in the Magical Land of Equestria, it's in a changeling pod, as per Kris Overstreet's Changeling Space Program where the bright green chrysalises act like full immersion VR simulators. Those pastel love bug metamorph critters have to have a food source and some ponies got to have sunshine in a bag. But not for long, the future is coming on.

The ponies living it up are Svengallop, Angelwings, John Candy, Twist, Wind Rider and some other pony. The 7th pod might as well be empty.

As for drawing a town and dozens of buckets of red paint, nope. Not doing that. John Candy in pod 3 can take care of that.
